A first generation student uses MyPath2ASU to facilitate the transfer process
First-generation transfer student Ludwig Lopez credits his family for inspiring him to continue his education after graduating from high school.
“My motivation to pursue higher education comes from my family. They’ve worked so hard to get me to this point, and it’s my job to keep fighting. I also want to inspire my niece and nephew, who are still young, to discover the incredible opportunities to pursue higher education and what it could offer them in the future,” Lopez said.
First starting at Western College of Arizonahe said he realized that starting his graduate studies at a community college was a more practical option, “as it was cheaper and allowed me to find additional scholarships to transfer to a university” .
Later, Lopez used MyPath2ASU to further help him navigate his transfer degree requirements and ensure he was taking the right courses. Today, he has successfully transferred to Business (Global Logistics Management), BA degree program with an emphasis on international business at Arizona State University WP Carey School of Business.
An honor student at Arizona Western College, Lopez was also accepted into Barrett, the Specialized College at ASU, an achievement he is very proud of as Barrett was named the top honors program in the country. Here, Ludwig shares more about his trip to ASU and his future pursuits.
Question: Were you involved in any clubs or organizations at your community college? If so, please share which ones and how your participation impacted your community college experience.
Answer: I was part of Phi Theta Kappa, which is an honorary society at Arizona Western College. One of the projects this company was involved in was volunteering at the local food bank. We have helped many families by packing the food that has been donated there. It seemed extremely rewarding to me.
Q: Why (and when) did you choose your specialization?
A: I chose my major because it brings together two of my favorite subjects, namely business and the incredible cultures of the world. It has always fascinated me because it offers a new experience in solving problems.
Q: Why did you choose ASU?
A: ASU is one of the most affordable universities in Arizona. I also chose it because it is not too far from my home and I can often visit my family.

A: MyPath2ASU was a great tool to use as it helped me learn about the specific requirements for my major. It also made it easier to plan my college classes so that my credits transferred smoothly to ASU.
Q: What have you enjoyed the most about your ASU experience so far?
A: The learning environment at ASU is wonderful. The teachers are amazing to work with and are easily accessible.
Q: What advice would you give to a new transfer student?
A: The idea of starting a new school can be daunting, especially if you’re a first-generation student. However, don’t let that be the reason to stop you from pursuing your dreams. They are worth fighting for.
Q: What are your plans after you graduate?
A: I plan to pursue a Masters in Supply Chain Management at ASU. However, I also plan to travel abroad to broaden my experience in the global environment.
