Alana Strong of Caprock named GOAT Fellow of the Week

AMARILLO, TX (KFDA) – Our NewsChannel 10 FirstBank Southwest GOAT Scholar Athlete of the Week learned the importance of grades and basketball eligibility as a freshman. Now she is a straight A student. Meet Alana Strong from Caprock.

“It’s the only thing I know how to do,” Strong said. “Wake up, come practice and do some shots. “

Caprock senior shooting guard Alana Strong always finds ways to provide assistance or score in the paint.

“I’m an offensive driver, you know,” Strong said. “Try to reach the basket. Go to the cup. Do what I can.

“She knows how to finish on the edge and that’s one of the things we’ve always tried to use with her,” said David Smiley, Caprock Girls’ Basketball Head Coach. “She’s a good graduate.

She started playing basketball since she knew how to walk, but when it came time for the ball in high school, Strong’s academic weakness kept her from entering the court. It was then that she decided to move to Caprock and play for Coach Smiley.

“I would say Coach Smiley,” Strong said. “He had a big impact on me after my freshman year, you know. We had this special bond, so he kind of made it like a home here. “

“The classroom is number one,” Smiley said. “It’s really important to me. When we got her she had a hard time there, but man, she’s a straight student. Work really hard in the classroom and it shows here.

Now Strong is an A-level student with a GPA of 3.7. After high school, she plans to study computer science and aspires to play college football, but she needs to train first.

“I’m trying to save my work,” Strong said. “Morning training, after school, over lunch, I try to spend an hour or two. At least eight hours at the gym a day. “

“I mean basketball is her love and we really want to help her take it to the next level because I really feel like she can do it,” Smiley said.
