Brightbill collects weekly ACC Defensive Honor

DURHAM, North Carolina—Duke Graduate Student Goalkeeper Grace Brightbill was named the ACC Co-Defensive Player of the Week, as announced by the league office on Tuesday afternoon. Brightbill shares the prize after their stellar performance against Old Dominion on Sunday.

This is Brightbill’s first weekly career prize and the second CCA defensive honor for the Blue Devils this season.

Making his first career start, Brightbill anchored Duke’s defense with a career-high eight saves en route to a 5-1 win over the Monarchs. Old Dominion scored midway through the first quarter before Brightbill and Duke put their pincers on the visitors.

The Alexandria, Va. Native was excellent leading the defense throughout her 56 minutes, including stopping the Monarchs on 10 penalty corners. A transfer from a Princeton graduate student, Brightbill’s 56:30 in the cage was also a career high in minutes as Charlotte Johnson entered for the final 3:30. His previous career record was four saves.

The Blue Devils close their home team on Saturday, October 16 against number 7 Syracuse. The first shot is set for 12 noon, and Duke will honor his graduate students and seniors after the game.
