Construction project begins to install sod at Robb Field, Fairchild Field
SHIPPENSBURG, PA – Construction of turf installation projects has started at two of the University of Shippensburg’s sports venues: Robb Field (softball) and Fairchild Field (baseball).
Both sites have their lawns removed and replaced with new Astroturf surfaces. Significant drainage, trenching and other repairs will also be carried out at each facility.
“I am very excited to start these projects,” said Jeff Michaels, sports director. “We always aim to provide the best possible facilities for our student-athletes, and the move to turf can only help our programs, especially with when their seasons are played.”
Michaels praised the student-athletes, coaches and staff for their patience this fall working around construction.
“I am grateful for the resilience of our student-athletes and coaches who have worked through a fall season that has at times been chaotic due to schedule adjustments, but I believe the challenges faced will be worth it once they are over. projects completed, ”Michaels mentioned.
The goal is for the construction of each facility to be completed by January.
The current site of the Raider baseball field has been in place since 1971, with the team playing their home games every year at the site, with the exception of 1974 at Eckels Field. On April 29, 1995, the field was named G. Arthur Fairchild Field in honor of head coach Art Fairchild, who retired at the end of the season.
The current site of the Raider Softball Field has been in place since the team’s inception in 1978. It is part of the Robb Sports Complex – the namesake Claudia Robb was an integral part of the formative years of women’s athletics in college. in the 1920s. The site hosted the PIAA Softball Championships for over 20 years.
