Dean of Clarkson Libraries Appointed Chairman of NY Library Association Intellectual Freedom Committee

Michelle Young, Dean of Libraries at Clarkson University, has been appointed by the president of the New York Library Association (NYLA) to chair the NYLA Intellectual Freedom Committee (IFC). In this role, Young will serve as a liaison between NYLA members and the American Library Association’s Office of Intellectual Freedom (ALA-OIF), and strive to maintain a strong partnership with the Roundtable on Intellectual Freedom. from the NYLA. The IFC promotes the use of ALA-OIF resources and services in New York State and acts in concert with the NYLA Legislative Committee to determine whether an intellectual freedom issue has a legislative component of State. IFC also administers the NYLA Intellectual Freedom Award.

Young has experience in staff development, strategic planning, construction and renovation projects, as well as policy and planning work. She is very involved in working with a variety of committees, teams and boards that span the academic spectrum. In addition, she has successfully participated in organizational governance, publication, presentation and fundraising activities.

Young was NYLA President 2018-2019, American Library Association Section President for New York State 2018-2019, NYLA Academic and Special Libraries Section President 2016-2017 , and chairman of the board of directors of the Northern New York Library Network from 2017 to 2019.
