Experts point out how students can earn extra money for college

The University of Viterbo offers a wide variety of scholarships based on academic achievement and student interests

LA CROSSE, Wis. (WKBT) – Students may think it’s a daunting task to win a college scholarship, so they won’t bother applying for one.

But experts say the opposite is true.

At Viterbo University of La Crosse, students must first apply for admission to be eligible for scholarships.

But no matter your background, all it takes to win a scholarship is to apply.

The students walking around the Viterbo campus are there for one reason: to take the next big step.

“College is one of the best investments a student can make,” said Brian Weber, assistant vice president of enrollment management at Viterbo. “But it can be steep.”

Something that can flatten the cost? Scholarships.

“Looking for scholarships can be a big help,” Weber said.

The university offers scholarships based on academic achievement and student interests, he said.

“Just to gain admission into the institution, a student can see between $10,000 and $16,000 a year in scholarships,” Weber said.

It has been proven in Viterbo that students can get scholarships just by enrolling in their majors.

David Tabachnikov, CEO of ScholarshipOwl, says one of the most common scholarship myths is that students need a high GPA to win one.

“There are many scholarships available for all sorts of things,” Tabachnikov said.

Another common misconception is that scholarships require many different essays.

A growing number of scholarships are being awarded for posting on social media, Tabachnikov said.

Students can even earn money by making dance videos on TikTok, he said.

“Scholarship providers hate reading essays almost as much as students hate writing them,” Tabachnikov said. “But watching 1,000 30-second videos on the same topic? It’s actually very fun, creative and engaging.

Scholarships probably won’t cover tuition, but they can make a difference.

“A thousand dollars in scholarships is a lot more than a thousand dollars in student loans,” Tabachnikov said.

Saving money for students investing time in their future goals.

Another common myth about scholarships is that they are only available to high school seniors. In fact, students can apply for scholarships as juniors while in high school, Tabachnikov said.

PurseOwl is just a resource where you can search for scholarships. All students start with a seven-day free trial.

The three La Crosse colleges also offer a wide variety of scholarships. More information can be found by clicking on the links below.
