Outstanding South Range Wrestler, 3x State Qualified “Student Athlete of the Week”
CANFIELD, Ohio (WKBN) – For South Range Sr. Michael Markulin, wrestling is a family affair.
“My dad wrestled when he was in high school so I was kind of raised around it and always knew that would be my main goal and my main sport,” said Markulin.
The all-conference and district wrestler has had about 135 career wins. He is state qualified three times and placed fifth in the state tournament as a junior. He is also the first freshman in the history of the program to qualify for the States.
“It means a lot that these children are coming,” added Markulin. “They will see my name and have something to reach for. Maybe they want to be the first freshman to go to the state. It’s great to be that cornerstone for all the other kids as they look to achieve their goals as well. “
This week alone, Markulin and the Raiders won their second straight conference title.
Markulin is also the recipient of a three-year baseball and golf letter for the Raiders.
In class, he has a cumulative GPA of 4.0 and ranks first in his class.
“It’s really about balancing everything and making sure everything runs smoothly, planning your schedule,” he said. “It definitely allowed me to have a more timely way and not just procrastinate or fly away.”
He is a member of the National Honor Society and the Key Club and co-founded the Raiders Spirit Club.
“We’ve always had a tight-knit community, everyone supports everyone’s community, but we haven’t had much to show for that,” Markulin said. “So I think it’s just a great way to bring the kids together and show it, to show how close-knit and well-balanced our community is.”
Markulin will wrestle next year at Cleveland State University.
“The whole campus seemed like home to me. I knew it as soon as I stepped on it. Coaches, Coach Moore and Coach Musser, you could say their knowledge of the sport and they really want to make you the best wrestlers and people possible, ”he said.
