“Sexual harassment, extortion, intellectual fraud in universities unacceptable”

The president, Major General Muhammadu Buhari (retired), has said that the stories of sexual harassment, extortion and plagiarism emanating from university campuses and other higher institutions are totally unacceptable.

The president also instructed university unions to work together to ensure that the challenges are addressed.

Buhari reportedly said the comments in the latest bulletin from the Nigerien Universities Commission.

The president reportedly spoke through a commission director, Mr. John Ahmadu, at Oye-Ekiti Federal University in Ekiti State.

He was quoted as saying, “The stories emanating from some of our campuses, such as sexual harassment, extortion, plagiarism and other forms of intellectual fraud and corruption are totally unacceptable.

“Unions can do more to help solve these problems for a much better university system.

“Funding is a major problem facing the Nigerian university system as well as the main base for the relentless industrial actions in the Ivory Towers.

“We will continue to support the university system by improving funding and infrastructure development. In this regard, my government has repositioned TETFUND so that it can fill the infrastructure gaps in our higher education institutions.

He stressed that his administration had always paid serious attention to the issue of university funding.

The bulletin added: “He (Buhari) however said that in light of dwindling resources at all levels, university directors must remain committed to higher levels of openness, transparency and accountability. integrity in the management of scarce resources.

“He asked them to carefully select their priorities on the basis of adequate planning and budgetary arrangements, saying that the ability to strike a lasting balance between the short, medium and long term priorities of an institution was a hallmark. of leadership in development. ”
