Students honor ‘everyday heroes’ at annual DART art competition

A collection of works by budding North Texas artists is on display at Dallas Love Field Airport and on transit buses through August 31. An annual tradition, the Dallas Area Rapid Transit Student Art Competition presents works from kindergarten to high school students.

This year’s theme was “Everyday Heroes Ride DART,” honoring Northern Texans who have helped their communities during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The paintings, drawings, and other drawings show a variety of hometown heroes, from doctors and nurses to police and firefighters. The art is located near the baggage claim area at Love Field.

“When you think of the people who really went through this pandemic, the nurses and doctors, our frontline workers, are the ones who saved us, and the students have seen it,” the DART spokesperson said, Gordon Shattles.

Shattles said some DART buses also featured the art on the interior walls of the vehicles. But one artist, Collin Chon, got to see his work exhibited outside of a DART bus after winning first place in the competition.

Chon, who is in 5th grade at Greenhill School in Addison, has included first responders, construction workers, catering workers and DART operators in his artwork.
