Texas A&M At Galveston Chief Academic Officer appointed

Texas A&M University in Galveston will welcome Deborah Thomas as Academic Director starting August 22.

A professor of oceanography, Thomas previously served as department head of oceanography and dean of the Texas A&M College of Geosciences, which merged into the new College of Arts and Sciences.

Thomas joined the university as an assistant professor in 2004. His research applies the chemical composition of marine sediments to the reconstruction of past climate, with a particular interest in the climate dynamics of globally warm periods of Earth’s history. His work is based on seabed samples collected as part of the International Ocean Discovery Program (IODP). She has led international research teams through the IODP, most recently as co-lead scientist for IODP Expedition 378 in the South Pacific (January-February 2020).

She got her doctorate. in Geological Sciences, an MS in Marine Science from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and a BS in Geological Science from Brown University. She is a member of the Geological Society of America.

Thomas will assume the role of Antonietta Quigg who served as interim associate vice president for academic affairs, associate vice president and director of studies at the Galveston campus for the past 18 months. Quigg will continue to serve as senior associate vice president for research and graduate studies.
