Wang, from Food Science, named US Fulbright Scholar for 2022-2023

Ya-Jane Wang of Bumpers College will spend four months in Brazil at the Federal University of Pelotas to participate in research and teaching on rice quality assessment.

Ya-Jane Wang, professor of carbohydrate chemistry in the Department of Food Science, received a US Fulbright scholarship to teach and conduct research in Brazil.

Wang teaches two courses – Food Analysis and Laboratory – to undergraduate and graduate students and Food Carbohydrate Chemistry to graduate students. His research mainly focuses on the identification of chemical components related to the quality of rice.

“As a Fulbright Scholar, I will work with Nathan Vanier and his colleagues at the Federal University of Pelotas in Brazil for four months in 2022 to engage in research and teaching on rice quality assessment” , Wang said. “Rice is one of the world’s most important staple foods. A growing and demographically changing population with increased incomes expects high quality rice. At the same time, global environmental change poses a great challenge for rice production. This project aims to improve international collaboration with Brazil, the most important rice producing country after the United States, and Asian countries in order to facilitate the development of new rice cultivars with improved yield and desired quality characteristics for domestic and export markets.
