Season 3 of The Irregular at Magic High School kicks off in January 2022. Here’s a quick look at the past two seasons to keep fans in the know.
The Irregular at Magic High School is one of the many animated series that kicks off the winter 2022 season. Based on a series of light-hearted novels, the popular anime offers fans political intrigue, magic and plenty of action over the course of of his first two seasons. Season 3, however, will take a step back and take fans into the past to examine the relationship between the Shiba siblings – and the effects it can have on the magical community. Before we begin, here’s a quick reminder of the history so far.
The Irregular at Magic High School Season 1: Setting the Scene
The Irregular at Magic High School takes place in an alternate story where magic exists and, due to its rarity, is commodified and militarized by four global superpowers. Shiba Miyuki and his older brother, Shiba Tatsuya, are the sibling protagonists of the series. Miyuki is the magically gifted honorary student while Tatsuya is her older bodyguard brother who is less adept in magic. Less adept at magic at first glance, that is to say.
Season 1 establishes the ranking system within First High School that defines the premise of the story. Students with outstanding magical abilities are placed in Course 1, while those with less magical prowess are placed in Course 2. Tatsuya’s increasing powers, despite being in Course 2, set him apart among his peers – the irregular, for better or for worse.
It’s not the only thing that causes tension in Season 1, however. Tatsuya, Miyuki, and their friends also confront an anti-magician infiltrator at their school, take part in competitions against other magical high schools, arrest an international crime syndicate that rigs competitions, and repel an attack from a rival nation.
Season 2: International Conflict and Potential Sibling Romance
Season 2 of The Irregular at Magic High School moves away from the academy to explore society’s controversial relationship with magicians. This season also deepens the relationship between the Shiba siblings and their connection to the powerful Yotsuba clan. The introduction of an exchange student, who also happens to be the leader of the United States of North America’s army of magicians, reinforces the series’ political intrigue.
Soon after, Tatsuya and his company come face to face with a group of parasites that infect and kill wizards and humans. The Parasites are later linked to Gide Hague, a member of the mysterious Seven Sages and leader of the anti-magician terrorist group Blanche. Combine that with the New Breed Front wizards’ supremacist stance and their foiled plan to blow up the Tokyo offshore tower, and fans must wonder if the tumultuous relationship between wizards and humans is beyond repair.
Miyuki also acknowledges her not-so-secret romantic feelings for her brother, with her candidacy to replace her aunt as the head of the Yotsuba looming above her head. Season 2 ends with the introduction of Sakurai Minami, an assistant appointed to Miyuki by none other than her aunt. The finale leaves fans wondering how Minami will move the Yotsuba agenda forward – and what effects that will have on Miyuki and Tatsuya’s relationship.
Season 3, starting with the aptly named “Reminiscence” arc, takes viewers back in time to flesh out the bond between the Shiba siblings. Their relationship is the key to the story and to understanding their dynamics as siblings, as a bodyguard and as a detail. If their relationship steeped in romance, any involvement would inevitably bring to light the machinations of the Yotsuba clan. As Season 3 perhaps moves away from the action to take viewers back in time, fans will learn more about how Miyuki and Tatsuya figure in Yotsuba’s plans – and the dangers that may arise. for the duo and their friends.
Season 3 of The Irregular at Magic High School premieres in January 2022 on Crunchyroll.
