World Intellectual Property Day, April 26, 2022 — “Intellectual Property and Youth: Innovating for a Better Future”

Message from Ms. Desma Charles, Registrar for World Intellectual Property Day

On this very important occasion of World Intellectual Property Day, celebrating the talent of young people under the theme “Intellectual Property and Youth: Innovating for a Better Future”, the Registry of Companies and Intellectual Property (ROCIP) of the General Prosecutor’s Office , seeks to raise awareness of the value of intellectual property rights in today’s economy and to recognize the creativity and innovation of our island’s youth.

Young people today continue to demonstrate their fresh ideas, energy, curiosity and confidence by turning their dreams into reality. They take on the challenges of innovation to drive change towards a more sustainable future.

It would be remiss of me to talk about youth creativity without highlighting our own young Saint Lucian creators, inventors and entrepreneurs. The youth of our island are making their mark in the creative industries including music, performing and visual arts and literary works. The fields of scientific inventions, agriculture and sports are also popular. Their creative minds actively pursue entrepreneurship and explore new business models that integrate IP tools into various aspects of commerce.

World Intellectual Property Day 2022 will provide young people with the opportunity to discover how intellectual property rights can support their goals and help them turn their ideas into reality. They will learn how the intellectual property rights system – trademarks, designs, copyrights, patents, plant breeders’ rights, geographical indications, trade secrets, etc. – can help create jobs and generate income, thus having a positive impact on the whole world. The Registrar of Companies and Intellectual Property stands ready to work with other relevant government departments and agencies, as well as ECCO, to explore ways to secure relevant resources made available by the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) and other international intellectual property offices.

I take this opportunity on behalf of the Registry to wish all Saint Lucians a happy World Intellectual Property Day and to extend my best wishes, especially to our young creators, innovators and entrepreneurs, or those aspiring to make it. , to pursue their intellectual property objectives. and ambitions to build a better future.
